Bylaws of the West 116th Block Association
Article I: Name
The name of this association shall be the West 116th Block Association (hereinafter referred to as the Association).
Article II: Purpose
The purpose of the Association shall be the forceful facilitation of fraternity between members of the Morningside Heights community.
Article III: Membership
Section 3.1 Eligibility
Any person residing between 125th Street and 110th Street between Riverside Drive and Morningside Drive shall be eligible for membership. All active Columbia affiliates of the Morningside campus shall also be eligible for membership.
Section 3.2 Dues
Members must pay the annual dues of $1.16 per individual.
Section 3.3 Rights and Responsibilities
Active members shall have one vote on each voting matter during meetings of the Association. Active members must be subscribed to the newsletter for the duration of their membership in the Association.
Article IV: Officers
Section 4.1 Titles and Duties
The officers of the Association shall consist of a President, a Secretary, and a Treasurer. Each officer shall have the following duties:
- President: The President shall conduct official business on behalf of the Association, oversee the organization of events, and ensure that the Association’s activities are carried out in accordance with its goals and bylaws.
- Secretary: The Secretary shall maintain accurate records of all meetings and official documents, handle correspondence, and support the President in organizing events.
- Treasurer: The Treasurer shall manage the financial affairs of the Association, including maintaining financial records and overseeing the collection and disbursement of funds.
Section 4.2 Elections
Elections for officers shall be held once a year at the end of the calendar year. The term of office for each officer shall begin in January of the following year and last for one year. Officers may be elected for subsequent terms. Elections shall be conducted using an instant runoff system. Candidates for office shall not participate in election proceedings.
Section 4.3 Removal of Officers
An officer may be removed from office by a two-thirds (⅔) vote of the members present and voting at a duly called meeting.
Article V: Committees
Committees may be established at the officers’ discretion or through a petition signed by at least 10% of the membership.
Article VI: Meetings
Section 6.1 Frequency
The Association shall hold a minimum of two meetings per year. Additional meetings may be called as needed by the officers or at least 10% of the membership.
Section 6.2 Quorum
A quorum for conducting official business at any meeting shall be ten percent (10%) of the active membership.
Article VII: Amendments
Section 7.1 Proposal
Amendments to the bylaws must be proposed in writing to the officers prior to the meeting at which they are to be voted on.
Section 7.2 Approval
Amendments shall be adopted by a two-thirds (⅔) vote of the members present and voting at the meeting.
